These are examples, not a menu you have to fit into. Behavior science starts by getting specific about what someone wants to learn, build, change, understand, or make easier.

The first useful step is often understanding what the habit accomplishes in the moment. A behavior can persist because it is easy, familiar, immediately rewarding, removes something unpleasant, gets attention, fills time, or reliably happens in the presence of the same cue.
Change becomes more realistic when a person builds an alternative that can compete with the old pattern. The goal is not to win an argument with yourself. The goal is to arrange conditions in which the new behavior has a reasonable chance to occur again and again.
Morning routines, work habits, productive work habits, family habits, study habits, evening routines, and health-related routines all happen in contexts. Phones, schedules, other people, physical spaces, time pressure, reminders, and immediate consequences can all influence what occurs.
That means behavior change can involve changing more than the behavior itself. Sometimes the most effective adjustment is to change what the person sees, what is within reach, what happens first, or how much work it takes to begin.
A repeated behavior is information. It tells us something about learning, context, effort, cues, and consequences. That gives us something useful to work with.
